The PPG Vibrance Collection Midwest Supermodified Association made their second appearence of the month at Sandusky Speedway on Saturday night. This would be their final tune up before the Hy-Miler Supermodified Nationals on July 24 & 25. Tim Jedrzejek topped the MSA field with a time of 14.839 plus he won the third heat race earlier in the evening and appeared to be the man to beat. In the MSA thirty lap feature it was Tim Jedrzejek scoring his second MSA feature win at Sandusky Speedway getting past his teammate Bob Dawson to give the Reeds Salvage sponsored cars a 1-2 finish. Other feature race winners tonight were Stephan Schlea taking the Street Stock main. In the Modified twenty five lap feature, fifteen year old Nick Grodi won his first of the season holding off Ali Kern. While this was Grodi's first Modified feature he has 172 career feature wins in the Go-Karts and Quarter Midgets. Julia Buckles won the Spectator Stock feature making it two in a row and three for the season for the Elyria teenager.
The Street Stock feature was up first tonight and Clayton Karl led from the pole. Stephan Schlea advanced into the lead from his third starting spot. Following Schlea was Eugene Rothacker, Gary Perram, Joey Wyckoff and Kenny Calhoun. The yellow was out for a melee on lap seven involving Perram. Wyckoff, Mark Resor and Justin Hamilton. On the restart Schlea pulled away from Rothacker as Karl, Calhoun and Wyckoff rounded out the top five positions. Mike Guiher spun in turn four on lap twelve to bring out another yellow. On this restart Schlea once again continued to pull away from Rothacker. Schlea would have a half a straightaway lead when the checkered flag waved.
The twenty five lap Modified feature was next. Greg Sharp was the early race leader, leading from the pole. Following Sharp was Nick Grodi, Ali Kern, Doug Meyer and Kenny Phillips. The yellow waved on lap three as the leader was involved in a tangle in turn two with Jim Martin and Kenny Phillips. Unfortunately for Martin his evening was over as the field was sorted out and Nick Grodi was the new leader. Lining up behind Grodi was Kern, Meyer, Dave Dobbins and Jim Blagg. Grodi would hold strong as the field remained unchanged until the yellow waved on lap nineteen for Jason Drew who encountered mechanical problems on the track and slowed dramatically. On the restart Grodi pulled away from Kern to take the checkerd flag which was the first of the season for the fifteen year old driver.
The MSA thirty lap feature was pushed out and the front row was made up of Mark Sammut and Jack Smith. When the green flag waved it was Sammut leading the twenty one car field. Sammuts lead was short as Bob Dawson took command of the lead putting Sammut into second followed by Jon Henes, Charlie Schultz and Tim Jedrzejek. The leaders wasted no time in getting around lapped traffic as they set a torrid pace around the Sandusky Speedway half mile oval. The yellow waved on lap seventeen when Tim Ice came sliding across the front straight with flat tire. Ice was able to rejoin the race. The running order on the restart was Dawson, Sammut, Jedrzejek, Charlie Schultz and Trent Stephens. There was another yellow on the restart which resulted in Randy Burch getting towed back into the pit area but he would rejoin the race on lap nineteen. Dawson pulled away on the restart as Jedrzejek went to the low groove to set up a pass. Schultz tangled with Sammut in turn three to bring out another caution. Sammut was able to rejoin the race but had to start at the back of the line up. The race was shaping up to be a battle between the Reed Salvage team cars of Dawson and Jedrzejek. Jedrzejek would take the lead just before there was another tangle on lap nineteen. This incident resulted in the race being red flagged as Jon Henes, Mark Sammut and Joe Armbruster were all involved going into turn one. Only Armbruster was able to rejoin the race. The restart was Jedrzejek, Dawson, Stephens, Jack Smith and Denny Fisher. With a clear track in front of him, Jedrzejek proceeded to open up over a half straightaway lead over Dawson once racing resumed and went unchallenged to the checkered flag.
The Spectator Stock fifteen lap feature closed out the evening. Julia Buckles jumped into the lead from her third starting position with Kevin Jaycox Jr. in second. Mike White and Cory Rothacker got past Jaycox Jr. and began reeling in the leader. At the halfway point it was Buckles, White, Rothacker, Jaycox Jr.and Justin Cranmore. Rothacker moved into second but was not able to catch Buckles at the finish. Julia Buckles has now won two feature wins in a row and three so far this season
